PI: Dr. med. Olympia Bikou
Affiliation: University Hospital LMU Munich, Department of Medicine I – Cardiology

Research Focus:
Dr. Olympia Bikou specializes in clinical and experimental electrophysiology with a particular interest in the pathophysiology and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardias. Her research combines clinical cardiology, signal processing, and translational modeling to develop patient-specific therapies for arrhythmias.

Role in ICON:
Within ICON, Dr. Bikou contributes to the research focus on myocardial diseases, rhythm disorders, and valvular dysfunction. Her group investigates the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, develops biomarkers and digital biosignal tools for early detection and risk stratification, and collaborates with large animal electrophysiology models to evaluate new therapeutic strategies.

Key Areas of Work:

  • Mechanistic modeling of arrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrosis, ectopic excitation centers)
  • Digital diagnostics and long-term monitoring for AF recurrences
  • Collaboration in 3D electroanatomical mapping and image-guided interventions
  • Development and preclinical validation of personalized antiarrhythmic therapies

Techniques & Infrastructure:

  • Analysis of electrocardiographic signals
  • 3D electrophysiological mapping in porcine models
  • Integration of imaging techniques into rhythm diagnostics
  • Study design for electrophysiological therapies
